Manchester United youngster Zidane Iqbal has sent a message to supporters after signing his first professional contract with the club.

The 17-year-old has not played for the Under-18s since December but is expected to regain fitness soon and United rate the attacking midfielder so highly they wanted to tie down Iqbal on a professional deal to oversee his development.

United intend to promote Iqbal to the Under-23 squad next season as he turns 18 later this month.

Iqbal wrote on Instagram: “Delighted to announce I’ve signed my first professional contract with my boyhood club @manchesterunited hard work continues”

Iqbal’s representatives, Base Soccer, tweeted: “Many congratulations to Zidane Iqbal, who has signed his first professional contract with Manchester United. Well done Zee!”

Iqbal had started seven times for the Under-18s before he suffered an injury in December and made his debut at that level when he was just 16 last year.

Academy talents Teden Mengi, now on loan at Derby County, Shola Shoretire, Hannibal Mejbri and Anthony Elanga have all inked new deals this calendar year.

18-year-old striker Elanga could join Shoretire in making him United first-team bow after being included in the travelling squad for their Europa League clash with Granada, underlining Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’ s commitment to blooding youth at Old Trafford.

“Anthony will be in the squad, he’ll be on the bench,” Solskjaer said. “He has impressed when he has been in training with us.

“He was very unlucky two or three months back when he got a bad injury and he’s worked really hard to come back, because he was just due to move into the first-team squad back then.

“He’s got an X factor, some attributes, it’s not like a gift, but he’s got the acceleration, pace, speed, that’s a given for wingers and he’s got qualities I like.

“He’s a goalscoring winger, he’s confident, he likes to beat men, right foot, left foot, he’s got a great attitude. His appetite and hunger to improve and when he’s been training with us the while he’s been here now he’s not been fazed by it, he’s confident.

“He’s not just there for experience, he’s ready to play a part if he has to.”
