Hannibal Mejbri didn’t train with the Manchester United first-team squad ahead of their Europa League trip to face Real Sociedad because he is still recovering from injury.
Shoretire has been included in the 22-man travelling squad for United’s first-leg encounter with Sociedad in the Europa League round of 32, but there was no place for Mejbri following his injury.
The French midfielder suffered a shoulder injury during the U23s’ win over Arsenal last Friday night and was substituted midway through the first-half of the match after he had tried to continue playing.
As a result Mejbri missed first-team training ahead of the clash with Sociedad on Thursday morning.
Speaking after the 3-0 win at Leigh Sports Village reserve team manager Neil Wood confirmed the injury blow from which Mejbri is yet to return.
“I think he just fell heavy, he wasn’t moving his arm very well,” Wood said. “He’s got a bit of pain in his upper body, but right now not too sure what it is. He’s got a sling on just as precaution at the minute, so he will be assessed and I imagine he’ll need a scan over the next day or two.
“Hopefully it is nothing too serious. He had a couple of days out injured with his ankle injury (last week) so he ended up staying with us on Wednesday and Thursday to train. I think he, similar to Shola, will move over to the first-team bubble and that will be excellent for them both.”
Speaking ahead of the Arsenal match last week first-team manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer confirmed the young duo’s promotion to the first-team bubble and explained why it had come about.
“The young kids, we’ve moved Shola up with us, Hannibal will join us and we’ll keep them with us for a while,” he said in his press conference.
“It’s the next step in their development, we’ve got to take the hit that when they play for the reserves they have to travel by themselves. It’s a nice step for them, they’ve done really well.”
