Why Edinson Cavani doesn’t start for Manchester United vs Burnley

2 min read

Edinson Cavani is only on the bench for Manchester United against Burnley as he didn’t feel ready to start a third game in a week.

The 34-year-old has only once started three successive games for United since joining as a free agent in October. Having scored in the wins against Tottenham and Granada this week it was expected Cavani would start against the Clarets, but Marcus Rashford has returned in his place.

Cavani has been in good form this week, taking his tally of United goals to nine, but his fitness has been a concern in recent weeks and Solskjaer said the Uruguayan had told him he wasn’t up to starting again.

But the United boss said Rashford has told him he’s fit and ready to go as he continues to manage a foot injury.

“We’ve got to manage him well. He’s not played or started three games in a week for a long time Edinson so when I spoke to him he felt being a substitute was the best thing,” Solskjaer told MUTV.

“With Marcus, it’s a long time since I’ve asked him how you are and he’s said good. A very long time.”

Cavani withdrew from the Europa League trip to Milan shortly before United were due to take off last month complaining of fitness issues and Solskjaer has previously said he is a player who looks to train hard before he plays, something United have been restricted with this season in a packed schedule.

Solskjaer has made five changes to the side in total, with Dean Henderson, Harry Maguire, Luke Shaw and Scott McTominay also coming in and David de Gea, Axel Tuanzebe, Alex Telles and Nemanja Matic dropping to the bench.
