Why Diogo Dalot was left out of Manchester United’s Europa League squad to face LASK

Manchester United defender Diogo Dalot missed the club’s 2-1 Europa League win against LASK through injury.

The Portuguese full-back was a notable omission as Ole Gunnar Solskjaer named a second string side against the Austrians.

Dalot is out of favour at Old Trafford, despite being heralded as the ‘next Gary Neville’ by Jose Mourinho following his £18m move from Porto in 2018.

Timothy Fosu-Mensah was given the nod ahead of him towards the end of the Premier League season when Solskjaer wanted a repalcement for Aaron Wan-Bissaka and it looked that way again against Lask, with Dalot not even in the squad.

That’s led to reports that the full-back could be headed for the exit door at the Theatre of Dreams but the Manchester Evening News claim the 21-year-old was injured.

It’s claimed Dalot was unable to train with the first team throughout the week and was unable to prove his fitness in time for the clash.

United face Copenhagen in Cologne on Monday, where they’ll be the favourites to progress to the last four.

Should United beat the Danes, they will face one of Wolves, Olympiacos, Roma or Sevilla.

Wolves take on the Greek giants in the second leg of their last-16 clash tonight with the aggregate score currently at 1-1.
