Why Alex Telles pushed for Man United transfer despite Porto argument

2 min read

Porto president Pinto da Costa has claimed Alex Telles’ main argument for wanting to move to Manchester United was to boost his chances of playing regularly for Brazil.

Telles joined United on transfer deadline day as the Reds moved to strengthen at left-back, with Ashley Young having left the club earlier in the year, and Luke Shaw and Brandon Williams in poor form.

With a year left on Telles’ contract with Porto, Da Costa tried to keep hold of the Brazilian but was fighting a losing battle due to the player’s desire to move to Old Trafford.

He told TVI: “I’m never satisfied when a good player leaves. Look, a big sale that I was disgusted with was Hulk’s and it was a big deal. There are times when we have no other solution.

“A week or two earlier, Alex’s sister, who’s the agent, expressed his desire to leave. A week before closing the market, he asked to leave because he really wanted to go to Manchester United.

“I tried not to let him go, I tried to compensate him, even if it was to stay until the end of the year. But it’s not possible to keep a player who takes over publicly and before me and my management he wanted to leave.”

Da Costa argued with Telles that his international aspirations could be realised with Porto but the 27-year-old’s mind was made up: “The argument for leaving was that the current coach of Brazil only called players from three or four championships. I tried to contradict because he is currently in the national team.”

Telles has played three times for the Brazil, with two of those appearances coming since he secured his move to United on deadline day.
