Who started for Manchester United team in pre-season friendly vs Aston Villa

2 min read

Manchester United were without a host of players for their only pre-season friendly at Aston Villa today.

A leaked team surfaced online after the game kicked off at 2pm and was widely reported as fact by certain outlets but was actually inaccurate.

Donny van de Beek made his first United outing and Dean Henderson came in for his maiden appearance for the United first-team in the absence of David de Gea, who was not even on the bench.

Diogo Dalot returned to the first-team XI for the first time since March and Luke Shaw made his comeback after sustaining an ankle injury in July.

The United squad was so depleted Ole Gunnar Solskjaer named James Garner and Anthoy Elanga on the bench after the pair started in the Under-21s’ midweek thrashing of Salford.

De Gea and Anthony Martial were on international duty earlier this week and were not named in the 16-man matchday squad, although Scott McTominay started for Scotland and lined up at Villa.

Paul Pogba and Axel Tuanzebe are not fully fit while Chris Smalling and Marcos Rojo are training separately from the first-team squad in their own bubble amid the possibility they could leave.

Mason Greenwood is not scheduled to return to first-team training until early next week and Sergio Romero, Aaron Wan-Bissaka, Eric Bailly, Phil Jones, Fred, Nemanja Matic and Juan Mata have been completely absent from pre-season training.

Bruno Fernandes has not been at Carrington following international duty as his wife gave birth last week in Portugal. Fernandes posted a picture of himself in training on Instagram on Saturday afternoon.

Full United team vs Villa: Henderson, Dalot, Fosu-Mensah, Maguire, Shaw, McTominay, Van de Beek, Rashford, Lingard, James, Ighalo
