Ole Gunnar Solskjaer urged Marcus Rashford to get on the front foot against Gabriel Martinelli during the first half of Manchester United’s game against Arsenal.
Rashford was named on the right wing for the Premier League clash, facing the left-hand duo of Martinelli and Cedric Soares.
When Cedric was booked early on, Solskjaer was heard urging Rashford to attack on the wing and take his man on.
“Marcus, he cannot defend,” Solskjaer said, according to reporters at the game. “He cannot defend. Take him on if you want.”
Rashford was bright in a low-quality first half between United and the Gunners, but was unable to find an opening as the two teams went in at half-time goalless.
The forward had arguably the best chance of the first half as he found himself one-on-one with Bernd Leno in the six-yard box.
Yet he was unable to fashion out a goal-scoring chance as he tried to switch the ball onto his right foot but was eventually crowded out by defenders.
It led to criticism from Sky Sports’ Roy Keane, who argued the forward should have hit a shot first time.
He said: “Rashford must know that he’s not going to get four or five touches inside the Arsenal box.”

United will no doubt be looking to attack down the wing in the second half, with Anthony Martial coming on to replace midfielder Scott McTominay due to injury.
It meant a change in tactics for the Reds, with Paul Pogba moving into a central position and Martial out wide.
It gives United a chance to have two pacey players on the wing, with Pogba playing in a box-to-box role in midfield behind Bruno Fernandes.
