Werder Bremen are keen on signing Manchester United prospect Tahith Chong on loan, with the youngster’s first team opportunities at Old Trafford limited and unlikely to increase in the near future.
The 20-year-old has made just three Premier League appearances this season, all from the substitutes’ bench, making 11 appearances in all competitions, the majority of which have come in the Europa League.
Despite signing a new contract with the Red Devils in March this year, which keeps him at the club until 2022 with an option for a further year, progress into the first team has been slow.
With a move for Jadon Sancho looking increasingly likely, Chong’s game time is not about to increase and a loan move appears beneficial for the young Dutchman.
Discussions over a short-term deal are reportedly underway, with Chong’s representatives meeting the German club’s hierarchy, and Bremen’s sporting director Frank Baumann has spoken openly of how much he admires the attacking midfielder.
‘He’s got a lot of pace, he comes on the outside track – his profile fits,’ Baumann told WESER-KURIER. ‘Because of our situation, he’s a player who could be interesting.’
The financial impact of COVID-19 has been severe on the Bundesliga side and Baumann admits that loan moves will be their preferred mode of business this summer.
‘Borrowing players from top clubs like this can make sense to us,’ he said. ‘Because of our situation, he’s a player who could be interesting.’
Chong had spoken of the fact he had been promised opportunities when he signed his new contract in March, opportunities that have not really emerged.
‘I’m at a club where, if you work hard, you get your opportunities. It’s all about taking those opportunities as well,’ he told the official Manchester United website when he signed the new deal.
‘I think we’ve got a manager who believes in young players. It’s an exciting time at the moment.
‘I speak to the manager and everyone around the club to look to what is best for you to do. I think the club is coming in with a brilliant plan and it is just exciting to see what’s going to happen.
‘The club has done a fantastic job really with the young players. It’s always been a club that gives opportunities to youngsters. This year it has been amazing the faith and trust that the manager has been showing in the young players.’
