We simulated Real Sociedad vs Manchester United ahead of Europa League tie

3 min read

Manchester United continue their 2020/21 Europa League campaign on Thursday, as they take on La Liga outfit Real Sociedad in the Europa League Last 32.

United will be without Paul Pogba, Donny van de Beek and Edinson Cavani for the trip to Turin, whilst Anthony Martial and Scott McTominay are also injury doubts and face late fitness tests.

Dean Henderson, Eric Bailly, Daniel James, Alex Telles, Juan Mata and Nemanja Matic are all pushing to start, with youngsters Amad and Shola Shoretire also part of the United squad.

Ole Gunnar Solskjear’s side are likely to face a number of familiar faces, including former United winger Adnan Januzaj, former Manchester City midfielder David Silva, former Arsenal defender Nacho Monreal and former Newcastle United midfielder Mikel Moreno.

So, what line-up will Solskjaer go with against La Real? And, what will the final score be?

Ahead of the game, we used FIFA 21 to get a score prediction.

Real Sociedad vs United score predicted using FIFA 21

To set up this simulation, we used kick-off mode within FIFA 21 but didn’t select a team to control; we then selected the teams and watched the match play out by itself, to give us a prediction.

The AI difficulty was set to world class, with the line-up updated with the latest transfers, injuries and suspensions.

We predict that Real Sociedad could set up in a 4-5-1 formation, with their line-up as follows: Remiro; Gorosabel, Zubeldia, Normand, Monreal; Januzaj, Silva, Illarramendi, Moreno, Mikel Oyarzabal; Isak.

We predict that United could set up in a 4-2-3-1 formation, with their line-up as follows: Henderson; Wan-Bissaka, Bailly, Maguire, Telles; Fred, Matic; James, Fernandes, Rashford; Greenwood.

Manchester United were superb in the first-half of our FIFA 21 simulation, with the Reds going ahead just after the half hour mark.

Marcus Rashford drove past the full-back on the left and slipped a pass into the path of Mason Greenwood, who produced a clinical finish to make it 1-0.

And on the stroke of half-time, United made it 2-0 through Bruno Fernandes.

Fred won the ball back in midfield and quickly floated a ball into Fernandes, who beat his man with a fine piece of skill and smashed an effort into the far corner to double the away side’s lead.

La Real were much better in the second-half and United had to spend long periods of the game without the ball, as the Spanish side looked to grab a goal back.

On the hour mark, the Spanish side got the goal that their play deserved, with striker Alexander Isak beating Harry Maguire with quick feet in the box and firing past Dean Henderson in the United goal.

The latter stages of the game were very even, with both teams having spells of possession, but United were the team who looked more dangerous throughout and they secured a 2-1 win.

Predicted FIFA 21 score: Real Sociedad 1-2 United

Here are the full time stats:

FIFA 21 predicts that Manchester United should be able to put themselves in a commanding position by scoring two away goals, despite Real Sociedad having a decent amount of possession in the game, with the Reds the more dangerous team going forwards.
