We simulated Manchester United vs Southampton to get a score prediction

3 min read

Manchester United will be hoping to get their title ambitions back on track against Southampton in midweek, after failing to win their last two games in the Premier League.

United could be without midfielder Scott McTominay against Ralph Hassenhuttl’s side on Tuesday, after the Scot was forced off against Arsenal in the first-half, with Phil Jones the only notable absentee.

That could lead to Paul Pogba dropping deeper in midfield alongside Fred, with Mason Greenwood coming in on the right and Marcus Rashford moving over to his more favoured position on the left, whilst Anthony Martial could replace Edinson Cavani up front.

So, what line up will Solskjaer go with against the Saints? And, what will the final score be?

Ahead of the game, we used FIFA 21 to get a score prediction. This is what the game predicts.

Man United vs Southampton score predicted using FIFA 21

To set up this simulation, we used kick-off mode within FIFA 21 but didn’t select a team to control; we then selected the teams and watched the match play out by itself, to give us a prediction.

The AI difficulty was set to world class, with the line-up updated with the latest transfers, injuries and suspensions.

We predict that Manchester United could set up in a 4-2-3-1 formation, with their line-up as follows: De Gea; Wan-Bissaka, Bailly, Maguire, Shaw; Fred, Pogba; Greenwood, Fernandes, Rashford; Cavani.

We predict that Southampton could set up in a 4-4-2 formation, with their line-up as follows: McCarthy; Valery, Bednarek, Stephens, Bertrand; Armstrong, Ward-Prowse, Romeu, Djenepo; Adams, Ings.

This FIFA 21 simulation was a fairly even contest throughout, with both teams looking to assert themselves by dominating possession, but there were few chances for either side in the first-half.

In the second-half, both United and Southampton had spells where they were on top, with chances created at both ends. The first real chance of the game fell to Edinson Cavani, whose snapshot flew just wide of the post with McCarthy beaten.

McCarthy was in fine form in this simulation, with the goalkeeper producing an exceptional save to deny Bruno Fernandes from long range.

The Portuguese midfielder unleashed a powerful curling effort that looked destined for the far post, but McCarthy got his fingertips to it and it went just wide of the post.

With 15 minutes remaining, Che Adams had a great chance to open the scoring after brilliant build-up play led to Danny Ings playing in the striker, but his effort was too close to De Gea who managed to block the shot.

Heading into the final few minutes, with the game still goallless, a poor United delivery from a corner saw the ball cleared to the edge of the area. Marcus Rashford ran onto the loose ball and unleashed a a great strike which finally beat McCarthy and arrowed in to the top left hand corner.

It was an even game overall, but a quality strike from Rashford was enough to separate the two sides.

FIFA 21 predicts that Southampton could be a really tough opponent for United on Tuesday, with Hassenhuttl’s side putting in a strong performance, and a moment of quality could decide the clash either way.
