We simulated Manchester United vs Chelsea to get a score prediction

3 min read

After their stunning win against Paris Saint-Germain in midweek, Manchester United return to Premier League action on Saturday, as they host Chelsea at Old Trafford.

Anthony Martial will be forced to drop out of the United squad this weekend, as the Frenchman serves the second game of his three-game ban, with Eric Bailly, Jesse Lingard, Brandon Williams, Marcos Rojo and Facundo Pellistri also set to miss the visit of Chelsea. Bailly and Lingard are injured, while Wlliams, Rojo and Pellistri played for the Under-23s on Friday night.

So, what will the final score be? And what team will Solskjaer go with against Chelsea? We used FIFA 21 to simulate the outcome of this weekend’s game.

United vs Chelsea score predicted using FIFA 21

To set up this simulation, we used kick-off mode within FIFA 21 but didn’t select a team to control; we then selected the teams and watched the match play out by itself, to give us a prediction.

The AI difficulty was set to legendary, with the line-up updated with the latest transfers, injuries and suspensions.

We predict that United could set up in a 4-3-3 formation, with their line-up as follows: De Gea; Wan-Bissaka, Tuanzebe, Maguire, Shaw; McTominay, Pogba, Fernandes; Mata, Cavani, Rashford.

We predict that Chelsea could set up in a 4-2-3-1 formation, with the line-up as follows: Mendy; James, Zouma, Thiago Silva, Chilwell; Kante, Kovacic; Mount, Havertz, Pulisic; Werner.

In our FIFA 21 simulation of this game, chances were few and far between for both teams, despite Chelsea having the slight possession advantage over the course of the match.

The first chance of the game fell to Juan Mata, who cut inside and tried to bend an effort into the far corner, but Blues keeper Edouard Mendy produced a great save to tip the shot over the bar.

Chelsea striker Timo Werner had a great chance early in the second half, with the German striker making a run in front of Luke Shaw to try and get on the end of a cross from Christian Pulisic from the left, but the former RB Leipzig forward couldn’t quite connect and De Gea made a comfortable save.

With 15 minutes to go, De Gea kept United on level terms with a brilliant save to deny Mason Mount, with the Spaniard saving well with his feet from close range to deny the England midfielder.

Then there was a late, late twist in the game.

Chelsea were pushing forward and going all out for the winner in the final stages but, with seconds of the match remaining, Kai Havertz gave the ball away to Paul Pogba in midfield, who set Marcus Rashford away on the counter-attack.

The England international outpaced Kurt Zouma and played a square pass to Edinson Cavani, who took a touch and produced a cool finish past Mendy to win the game for United.

FIFA 21 predicted score: United 1-0 Chelsea

There were few chances in this game for both sides, with United winning our simulated clash on FIFA 21 thanks to a late goal from debutant Edinson Cavani.
