We simulated Man United vs Watford to get an FA Cup clash score prediction

3 min read

Days after their Carabao Cup semi-final defeat, Manchester United are in domestic cup action once again on Saturday, as they take on Watford in the FA Cup Third Round.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is likely to shuffle his pack for this FA Cup clash against the Hornets, with Brandon Williams, Eric Bailly, Axel Tuanzebe, Nemanja Matic, Daniel James, Donny van de Beek, Juan Mata and Mason Greenwood all expected to be involved.

Neither Amad Diallo or Facundo Pellistri will be available for this game, with Edinson Cavani missing the game through suspension and Phil Jones still injured.

So, what lineups will Solskjaer go with against Watford? And, what will the final score be?

Ahead of the game, we used FIFA 21 to get a score prediction. This is what the game predicts.

Man United vs Watford score predicted using FIFA 21

To set up this simulation, we used kick-off mode within FIFA 21 but didn’t select a team to control; we then selected the teams and watched the match play out by itself, to give us a prediction.

The AI difficulty was set to world class, with the line-up updated with the latest transfers, injuries and suspensions.

We predict that Manchester United could set up in a 4-2-3-1 formation, with their line-up as follows: Henderson; Williams, Tuanzebe, Bailly, Telles; Matic, McTominay; Mata, Van de Beek, James; Greenwood.

We predict that Watford could set up in a 4-4-2 formation, with the line-up as follows: Foster; Femenia, Troost-Ekong, Wilmot, Ngakia; Sarr, Chalobah, Cleverley, Sema; Deeney, Gray.

In this FIFA 21 simulation, United’s rotated side weren’t at their best, because despite having the majority of possession in the first-half, it was Watford who looked the most threatening.

Both Andre Gray and Ismaila Sarr had half chances to open the scoring, but in the 42nd minute, the Hornets got the goal their play deserved.

Sarr cut inside Alex Telles and played the ball into the feet of Troy Deeney, who took a touch and smashed a finish into the far post and past Dean Henderson to open the scoring.

Solskjaer had no choice but to turn to his bench in the second-half, with Bruno Fernandes, Paul Pogba and Marcus Rashford being introduced at half-time, and that was enough to turn the game on it’s head.

Just seven minutes after the break, Bruno Fernandes got United back on level terms, producing a quality left-foot finish which beat Ben Foster in the Watford goal.

Pogba, Greenwood and Williams all had good chances to put United back in the lead, but despite leaving it late, they eventually got the winner in the 90th minute.

Fernandes was again at the heart of the move, with the Portugal midfielder getting to the byline on the right and firing a powerful cross to the back post, where Alex Telles was waiting to slam the ball home and win the game.

FIFA 21 predicts that United may need to call on the likes of Bruno Fernandes, Paul Pogba and Marcus Rashford off the bench in order to win this FA Cup Third Round game, with Fernandes able to play a starring role off the bench.
