We ‘signed’ Sergio Reguilon for Man United with impressive results

3 min read

Having already completed the signing of midfielder Donny van de Beek from Ajax, MEN Sport understands that the club’s recruitment department are monitoring Real Madrid’s Sergio Reguilon and Dynamo Kiev’s Vitaliy Mykolenko.

Borussia Dortmund forward Jadon Sancho remains United’s priority target but are also monitoring a number of left-backs due to uncertainty in the position. Real Madrid left-back Reguilon spent last season on loan at Europa League winners Sevilla, whose impressive performances put him onto United’s radar.

So, what kind of impact could Reguilon have at United if he joined this summer?

We used Football Manager 2020 to predict how United might perform next season with Reguilon in the squad after the next transfer window.

Sergio Reguilon to United in July 2020

To set up this simulation, we used the Football Manager 2020 editor to arrange the transfer of Sergio Reguilon to United ahead of the 2020/21 season.

The Football Manager database currently contains data on more than 800,000 individuals and 45,000 active clubs, with data sourced from their international on the ground scouting network which numbers roughly 1,000 people. Among their ranks are some who are involved in football in professional capacities, including scouts and coaches.

In addition, each annual iteration of Football Manager has built-in algorithms which check for outliers and data discrepancies. Data accuracy is further ensured by input from contributors who are active within the professional game (players, agents etc.) who provide regular feedback.

This is what Reguilon’s player profile looks like in Football Manager 2020 before the start of the 2020/21 season.

Football Manager 2020 rates Reguilon as a superb young full-back, who is strong in both defence and attack.

We then simulated the 2020/21 season to see what kind of impact Sergio Reguilon could have at United.

Sergio Reguilon’s 2020/21 season for United

In our simulated season, Reguilon became the first-choice left-back for Manchester United, starting the majority of games in the 2020/21 campaign.

Overall the Spaniard made 54 appearances under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, of which 53 were starts, scoring once and providing six assists across the campaign.

Reguilon started 36 of United’s 38 Premier League games at left-back, showcasing just how important he became for United in our simulated campaign. In attack, the Los Blancos defender was a major creative force, creating 50 chances for his teammates in all competitions. Only Bruno Fernandes and Donny van de Beek created more.

But the 23-year-old was also a positive influence defensively too, helping United’s solidity in defence. In fact, Solskjaer’s side conceded only 35 goals in 38 league games in our simulated campaign, a record only Liverpool and Man City could better.

United’s statistically best eleven over the course of the season, according to Football Manager 2020, with Reguilon included at left-back.

United’s statistically-best eleven in 2020/21 was as follows: De Gea; Wan-Bissaka, Smalling, Maguire, Reguilon; Pogba, Van de Beek; Rashford, Fernandes, Greenwood; Martial.

So, how did United perform in all competitions?

United’s performance in 2020/21

In our simulated season, United had a significantly improved Premier League campaign, securing a second place finish in the league table, above Manchester City.

United won an impressive 88 points, with Liverpool finishing in first place with 95, but that represents a huge 22-point improvement from United’s real-life 2019/20 campaign.

The Reds were also much stronger in the cup competitions, winning the FA Cup against Arsenal in May, with Daniel James scoring a late winner.

Solskjaer’s side also had a phenomenal run in the Champions League, beating teams like Sevilla, Barcelona and Premier League champions Liverpool in the knockout stages, but eventually lost in the final to Chelsea.

Our simulation suggests that if United sign Reguilon this summer, he would be the club’s undisputed first-choice left-back at the club and have an impressive debut campaign, helping United win the FA Cup, reach a European cup final and secure a runners-up finish in the Premier League.

FM2020 suggests that Reguilon would be an upgrade on both Luke Shaw and Brandon Williams at left-back, with the Spaniard a well-rounded attacking full-back, with plenty of potential to improve further.
