Villarreal are willing to accept a bid lower than Pau Torres’ release clause, with Manchester Unietd and Real Madrid ready to pounce for his signature.

The 24-year-old has become one of the most highly-rated young centre-backs in Europe over the last two seasons when he has been a regular for the Yellow Submarines.

The Spain international is keen to make the next step in his career and join one of the biggest clubs in Europe, but is hoping they will not be put off by his €65m (£56m) release clause.

ESPN report that Villarreal will be persuaded to sell for a big closer to €50m (£43m) with the defender looking to make a move.

The imposing centre-back is under contract at the club until 2024, so they are under no pressure to sell, but if a big bid from the Red Devils or Los Merengues comes in then it would likely be accepted.

Manchester City were interested in Torres last summer but invested in Ruben Dias and Nathan Ake instead, with Dias proving a superb purchase from Benfica, while Ake has been largely on the fringes of the first team.

Reports emerged in Spain last month that Manchester United have already made an approach for the Spaniard, which has riled up Real Madrid, who think the English club are trying to steal a march in the transfer race.

Both clubs are very interested and will be battling it out for his signature this summer.

Real Madrid may have more pulling power for the Spain international to stay in his home country, but Manchester United have made him their primary target at centre-back, as a left-sided central defender, so will be pushing hard to sign him.
