Van Persie reminds Man United of transfer advice after deadline day

2 min read

Former Manchester United striker Robin van Persie has given his approval to the addition of Edinson Cavani — after advising the club to sign him back in February.

United completed the capture of the former Paris Saint-Germain striker on Monday, with the 33-year-old signing a one-year deal with the option of an extra year.

Cavani was one of four deadline day signings, with Alex Telles, Amad Diallo and Facundo Pellistri all arriving at Old Trafford.

The signing of Cavani has divided oppinion among supporters, with his pedigree and goal-scoring experience weighed against his age and the timing of the deal.

However, former United striker Van Persie is in favour, having suggested a move for Cavani earlier in the year.

The Dutchman hosted a Twitter Q&A session earlier this year, when he was asked about potential United transfers. “Edinson Cavani, brilliant player and available #goalmachine,” Van Persie responded when asked who United should sign during the summer window.

Van Persie was quick to remind fans of his suggestion on Tuesday.

He took a screenshot of his recommendation and wrote: “Agent RVP. Glad to see you were listening, @ManUtd! Brilliant signing and adds plenty of experience. Will improve players around him even more #Martial, #Rashford, #Greenwood. #GoalMachine”

After his move to United was completed, Cavani said: “Manchester United is one of the greatest clubs in the world, so it is a real honour to be here. I’ve worked really hard during the time off and I feel eager to compete and represent this incredible club.

“I have played in front of some of the most passionate supporters in football during my career and I know that it will be the same in Manchester. I cannot wait to experience the Old Trafford atmosphere, when it is safe for the fans to return.

“I look forward to continuing to write my little story inside the book of football and I know that’s why my focus has to remain the same as always – work, work, work. I have had a conversation with the manager and this has increased my desire to wear this beautiful shirt.”
