Van der Sar responds to Van de Beek Manchester United transfer

2 min read

Edwin van der Sar has all but confirmed Donny van de Beek’s impending transfer to Manchester United in the summer window.

Dutch midfielder Van de Beek is set to become United’s first signing of the summer after he passed a medical on Monday as well as agreeing personal terms.

Only the paperwork is left to be finalised in the next couple of days, with the 23-year-old currently away on international duty, but the club remain confident of confirming the transfer this week.

Van de Beek looks to have played his final game for boyhood club Ajax, and now chief executive officer Van der Sar has responded to the news.

Taking to social media on Monday night the United favourite replied to a tweet from former teammate Rio Ferdinand which all but confirmed the deal ahead of any official announcement.

Ferdinand tweeted a message which read: “Good Evening @Donny_beek6” followed by the eyes emoji, to which Van der Sar replied simply with a crying face emoji.

Van de Beek will become the latest star to depart Ajax following their run to the 2018/19 Champions League semi-finals, with Frenkie de Jong, Matthijs de Ligt and Hakim Ziyech having already departed the club.

The attacking midfielder will link-up with his new teammates once he returns from international duty with Holland, who play twice in the Nations League over the next week, against Poland on Friday and Italy on Monday.

Van de Beek had been expected to join Real Madrid this summer, but the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on revenues forced the La Liga champions out of the running and opened the door for United.
