United and City could lose crucial players for Premier League run-in

2 min read

Manchester United and Manchester City could be without several key players for important Premier League matches due to new quarantining rules.

Both Manchester clubs remain embroiled in the race for the Premier League title, with just under half of the season remaining.

Whilst the matches are coming thick and fast in a congested fixture list, there will be some minor respite for clubs during the March international break, which will see most of their star players head off to feature for their country.

However, South American countries have been named on a government ‘red list’ of places where all travellers must quarantine in a hotel for 10 days upon their return, with elite sportspeople not exempt.

That could impact both Manchester United and Man City, although it remains possible that an exemption could be granted for elite athletes, but that is by no means guaranteed.

FIFA announced in September that clubs are no longer obligated to release players for international duty because of COVID-19, unlike previously, and the strict quarantine ruling could play a rule in clubs’ upcoming decisions.

Reports in the Daily Mail claim that any player in International action for a South American club would not return to the UK until April 1. As a result, they would be forced to miss two rounds of Premier League action across April 3 and April 10 as well as the first leg of a possible Champions League quarter-final on April 6-7.

Manchester United play Brighton & Hove Albion at Old Trafford on April 3, before facing Tottenham Hotspur seven days later away from home. The team would also expect to be preparing for a Europa League last-eight clash.

For Manchester City, they’re away at Leicester City and then at home to Leeds United, two trick Premier League fixtures, which a Champions League quarter-final tie could also be sandwiched in the middle.

Alex Telles, Fred, Ederson and Gabriel Jesus could all be involved for Brazil, whilst Sergio Aguero could be in the Argentina squad too. Edinson Cavani could also be involved for Uruguay, which would be a big blow for United.
