Tuchel sends Pogba message ahead of PSG vs Manchester United

3 min read

Paris Saint-Germain manager Thomas Tuchel said Paul Pogba is ‘one of the best midfielders in the world’ as he praised the World Cup winner ahead of Manchester United’s Champions League opener in France.

United kick off their group stage campaign at the Parc des Princes against the Ligue 1 champions on the back of their impressive Premier League victory against Newcastle.

United were the victors the last time the two sides met, with the Reds recording their most memorable victory in recent history in March 2019 by overturning a two-goal deficit to send PSG out of the competition on away goals at the last-16 stage.

Tuchel tasted defeat in last season’s Champions League final and expects to face a much different United side to last year.

“The team has changed a lot, there are new players, new options, they have more experience,” Tuchel said during his pre-match press conference.”Pogba is still a key player, one of the best midfielders in the world for me. Fernandes is also key, he’s got a lot of assists, is delivering a lot and can deliver to players really deep like Martial and other players, really fast players.

“It’s one of the best teams playing in transitions and we have to try and stop these fast breaks, we need to keep the ball, show our style, impose this game, be structured and keep putting pressure and stop the game before the counter-attack.

“Pogba, Matic and Fernandes is really strong as far as midfield and they’re also dangerous with free-kicks.”

Tuchel praised new United signing Edinson Cavani, who left PSG upon the expiration of his contract earlier this year, although the MEN understands the Uruguayan has not travelled to France for the game having only begun training with his new teammates on Sunday.

He added: “[Edinson] will be in there every training session until the last second, you can totally rely on him. Like I said the real strikers, he’s a sensitive guy like all of them. He’s living for goals, living for scoring. When he scores he has the confidence and is one of the best No.9s in world football.

“It’s clear if you play for so long in a club like ours and have a connection with the fans it’s clear you have character and deserve this appreciation and it’s exactly like that. Hopefully he’ll show, not tomorrow but from Wednesday onwards to convince all of you. Tomorrow it’s not necessary to prove me right!”
