11 min read

Welcome to Standard Sport’s rolling coverage of the summer transfer window as the speculation ramps up.

The window officially opened in July after the completion of the delayed 2019-2020 Premier League season. Clubs will now be busy tweaking their squads ahead of the new campaign, with the deadline pushed back until October 5.

Arsenal have added Willian and are closing in on the signing of Gabriel Magalhaes, while Chelsea have added Thiago Silva and Ben Chilwell to a squad already boasting new arrivals Timo Werner and Hakim Ziyech.

Manchester United continue to work on a deal for Jadon Sancho with Donny van de Beek set to join in a £40m deal, and Tottenham have signed Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, Joe Hart and Matt Doherty.

Liverpool are biding their time in pursuit of Thiago Alcantara, but the biggest story is that Lionel Messi has requested to leave Barcelona.

Live Updates

Rakitic to rejoin Sevilla

It was always a likely option for Ivan Rakitic to head back to Sevilla this summer, and it appears as though the Croatian midfielder has sealed his exit from Barcelona.

According to Spanish reports, he is currently undergoing his medical in Seville ahead of signing a three-year contract.

‘Havertz fee ageed’

Kai Havertz is on the verge of becoming a Chelsea player, with the Guardian reporting that an initial £72million fee has been agreed with Bayer Leverkusen.

According to the Guardian and Fabrizio Romano, Chelsea will pay €80m (£71.6m) up front followed by a further €10m (£9m), and another €10m (£9m) if certain clauses are met.

Transfer specialist Fabrizio Romano has followed that latest Havertz update with some more information of his own.

He claims that the German playmaker – who has now joined up with the national squad ahead of Uefa Nations League matches against Spain and Switzerland – will be announced as a Chelsea player within the week.

Romano says all that is left is to prepare the official announcement and complete the necessary medicals and contracts, with Havertz apparently told the deal was done last Monday.

Another key update in terms of Chelsea’s hopes of signing Kai Havertz.

Bayer Leverkusen are due to resume training today after undergoing the necessary medical tests on Sunday, from which their star man was absent.

And Leverkusen coach Peter Bosz has now confirmed that he does not expect either Havertz nor the Monaco-bound Kevin Volland to return to training.

“I no longer expect Kai Havertz or Kevin Volland to train with us again,” he said.

Leicester identify Chilwell replacement

Leicester are understandably not content to let their obvious gap at left-back remain unfilled for long following last week’s £50m sale of Ben Chilwell to Chelsea.

The Foxes are in negotiations over Atalanta defender Timothy Castagne and Belgian journalist Kristof Terreur reports that they are hopeful of getting a deal completed soon.

Tottenham have also been linked with seven-cap Belgian international Castagne.

Everton agree Allan deal with Napoli

Arguably sitting alongside Jadon Sancho to Manchester United and Kai Havertz to Chelsea as one of this summer’s longest-running transfer sagas involving a Premier League suitor, Everton’s pursuit of Allan finally looks to have reached a successful conclusion.

The Toffees have been eager to reunite the Brazilian midfielder with former Napoli boss Carlo Ancelotti at Goodison Park, though an agreeement has thus far seemed hard to find.

However, according to Napoli president Aurelio De Laurentiis, the transfer is now sealed and set to be confirmed.

“Allan is joining Everton,” he said on Monday morning. “The deal will be announced soon.”

Man United want Upamecano after Van de Beek

After seemingly spending weeks getting bogged down in a Jadon Sancho stalemate with Borussia Dortmund, Manchester United are now looking to flex their transfer muscles with the new season looming.

With a £40m deal for Ajax midfielder Donny van de Beek set to be completed, the latest reports suggest Ole Gunnar Solskjaer also has his eye on a major defensive addition in the shape of Dayot Upamecano.

According to ESPN, United are targeting the RB Leipzig star as they prioritiese the signing of a top-class centre-back.

Upamecano has previously been linked with Arsenal and only signed a new three-year contract extension at Red Bull Arena in July, before leading Julian Nagelsmann’s Leipzig to the semi-finals of the Champions League in Lisbon.

Here is the very latest on the Conor Gallagher to Crystal Palace front, as we understand it….

Crystal Palace are closing in on the loan signing of Chelsea midfielder Conor Gallagher.

Standard Sport understands that the England Under-21 international underwent a medical on Sunday ahead of season-long switch to Selhurst Park.

Gallagher featured as a second-half replacement for new signing Hakim Ziyech during Chelsea’s 1-1 pre-season friendly draw against Brighton at Amex Stadium on Saturday.

The 20-year-old will now hope to make a smooth transition to regular Premier League football after impressing on loan in the Championship last season.

Gallagher scored six goals in 26 appearances for Charlton during the first half of the 2019/20 campaign before being recalled and sent back on loan to Swansea during the January transfer window.

The Chelsea academy graduate then helped Steve Cooper’s side to reach the second-tier play-offs, where they lost to Brentford in the semi-finals.

Gallagher made a further 21 appearances for Swansea, netting seven times.

Tottenham are making a move for Bournemouth striker Josh King, according to reports.

talkSPORT claim that Spurs have opened talks over the Norwegian striker, who would provide competition and back-up for Harry Kane in north London.

The report mentions the possibility of Tottenham even making it a double Cherries forward swoop, with Jose Mourinho also interested in King’s Bournemouth team-mate Callum Wilson.

Spurs have made three solid signings so far this summer, with the arrivals of Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg and Joe Hart followed by a £15m deal for Wolves full-back Matt Doherty that was completed over the weekend.

Brentford complete Toney deal

Brentford have wrapped up the signing of League One Player of the Year Ivan Toney.

The former Newcastle striker will officially join the Bees on a five-year contract on Tuesday after Peterborough accepted an offer believed to be worth in the region of £5m.

Sky Sports report that the deal for Toney – who scored 24 goals in 32 appearances for Posh last term – could eventually be worth double that figure with add-ons.

Toney’s arrival protects Brentford against the potential loss of 2019/20 Championship Player of the Year Ollie Watkins, who has been linked with a host of Premier League clubs including Aston Villa, Fulham and Sheffield United.

Crystal Palace win Gallagher loan race

Staying with Crystal Palace for a moment, it seems as if they are closing in on a deal for Conor Gallagher.

Football.London report that the young Chelsea midfielder underwent a medical on Sunday, with Palace seeing off competition from several other clubs in the race to land the 20-year-old on a season-long loan.

Gallagher – who featured for Chelsea in their pre-season friendly at Brighton on Saturday – initially shined in the Championship last season at Charlton before helping Swansea reach the play-offs.

Now he looks poised for a step up to Premier League football.

Crystal Palace eye Welbeck and Osayi-Samuel

Watford are braced for Premier League interest in Danny Welbeck.

The former Manchester United, Arsenal and England forward was unable to prevent the Hornets from suffering relegation back to the Championship last term after returning from injury.

Now The Mail report that Crystal Palace – in addition to Southampton – are eyeing a move for Welbeck as Roy Hodgson looks to further bolster his attacking options at Selhurst Park.

It is also rumoured that Palace are now chasing QPR’s Bright Osayi-Samuel having recently wrapped up a £19.5m deal for his former team-mate Eberechi Eze.

Arsenal target trio of new contracts

Arsenal are hoping that Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang won’t be the only player to commit his future to the club soon.

Standard Sport understands that the Gunners skipper is close to agreeing a new three-year contract at Emirates Stadium worth around £250,000 a week.

And according to The Mirror, Ainsley Maitland-Niles could also be set for a fresh deal if Arsenal resist transfer overtures from Wolves.

The report adds that there is also a new contract in the works for goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez, who impressed once again in the Community Shield win over Liverpool but will not be satisfied with reverting back to being Bernd Leno’s deputy amid interest from the likes of Aston Villa.

Argentine president wants Messi return

Argentina president Alberto Fernandez has urged Lionel Messi to return to his homeland.

Manchester City are the current favourites to sign the six-time Ballon d’Or winner this summer after he formally requested an exit from Camp Nou.

Messi joined Barcelona at age 13 and has spent 20 years in total at the club, never getting the opportunity to play professional football in his native Argentina.

And Mr Fernandez now wants to see that remedied, encouraging the 33-year-old to go back to where his youth career started at Newell’s Old Boys.

“You are in our hearts and we have never seen you play in our country,” he said.

“Give us the pleasure of ending your career with Newell’s Old Boys, your club.”

Mr Fernandez added: “The great merit of [Diego] Maradona is that he played alone against the world.

“I’ve never seen a player like Maradona. I admire him deeply – more than Messi, to be honest, because he comes from the Argentinos’ youth. He was a kind of gladiator, with incredible strength.”

ICYMI: Fulham sign Reed and Lemina

This flew under the radar a little last night with the Van de Beek news, but Fulham have now confirmed two midfield signings from Southampton.

As reported by Standard Sport last week, the newly-promoted Cottagers have swooped to land Mario Lemina on a season-long loan deal following his return from a similar stint at Galatasaray.

He follows Harrison Reed to Craven Cottage, with the 25-year-old having helped Scott Parker’s side return to the Premier League during a productive loan spell last season.

Van de Beek ‘deserves’ Man United move

Manchester United’s swoop for Donny van de Beek seems to have got the seal of approval from compatriot Rafael van der Vaart.

“Donny deserves this transfer so much,” the former Tottenham playmaker told NOS in the Netherlands.

“He has played excellent for Ajax.

“And Manchester United really need this kind of player in their team. This transfer is fantastic for us [Dutch people] too.

“We are all going to follow him now. This move is so deserved.”

Arsenal’s Diawara interest confirmed

Arsenal’s interest in Roma midfielder Amadou Diawara has been confirmed by the player’s agent.

The Gunners have been frequently linked with the Guinean international – formerly of Napoli – over recent weeks, with some reports suggesting that Lucas Torreira could even head in the opposite direction as part of a deal.

And while Diawara is said to be happy at Roma, his representative claims he is flattered to be linked with suitors such as Arsenal.

“Diawara is at a top club like Roma, where he is happy, as there is enthusiasm around the new owners,” Daniele Piraino told Tuttomercatoweb.

“However, he is also liked by many clubs in England, including Arsenal.

“Being linked with certain clubs is pleasing for him, as these are prestigious sides.

“Amadou is concentrated on football and his career.”

Man United hold Grealish talks

With a deal for Donny van de Beek on the brink of being completed, Manchester United appear to be targeting further midfield additions.

Jack Grealish has been mentioned in connection with a switch to Old Trafford intermittently throughout the summer and The Mail now report that talks have been held involving the Red Devils and Aston Villa.

However, Villa are said to be demanding an £80m fee for their influential captain, which could prove a stumbling block with United reluctant to pay above £60m-£70m for any single target this summer.

Liverpool ready to make £40m Sarr bid

Liverpool have made relatively slow progress on the transfer front this summer amid repeated warnings that they will not be splashing the cash after ending their Premier League title drought amid the coronavirus pandemic.

The Reds have already acquired Greek left-back Kostas Tsimikas from Olympiacos, though there has yet to be any substantial movement with regards to the future of Bayern Munich midfielder Thiago Alcantara.

Ismaila Sarr is another player heavily linked with Liverpool this summer and The Mirror now report that the Reds are ready to bid for the Senegalese winger, who was recently relegated from the Premier League with Watford.

Watford paid a club-record £40m fee to sign the player from Rennes last summer, with Liverpool said to be willing to match that figure one year on.

Man City ‘willing to pay Messi £450m’

Unsurprisingly, Manchester City seem ready to spend heavily in a bid to pull of a sensational coup and sign Lionel Messi.

The six-time Ballon d’Or winner failed to attend Barcelona’s pre-season tests on Sunday, with LaLiga later publicly announcing that he can only leave Camp Nou this summer if his €700m release clause is met.

According to the Daily Star, City are willing to pay Messi a mammoth £450m as part of a long-term strategy that would also include a move to sister club New York City FC later down the road.
