Tahith Chong asked about long-term future at Manchester United

2 min read

Manchester United youngster Tahith Chong insisted he is only focussing on his development and not his long-term future whilst on loan Werder Bremen.

The United academy graduate is on a season-long loan with the Bundesliga side in a bid to earn more first-team minutes after struggling for opportunities under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer at Old Trafford.

Chong remains one of the most highly-thought of youngsters to come from the United academy in recent times but that promise is yet to translate into senior performances.

Injuries and a period of isolation due to a teammate’s COVID-19 diagnosis have limited him to only seven appearances, totalling 206 minutes, in Germany so far.

Reviewing his first three months at Bremen, Chong has insisted his only thought is further developing with the Bundesliga outfit, rather than a return to Manchester United.

“I am very much in the here and now, and avoid looking too much into the future,” he told BILD. “I can say that I feel very comfortable here.

“Everyone is very accommodating to me, and I have made friends here. I can’t judge what people expect.

“I’ve been here two and a half months now; I have to learn a new language and get used to the game.”

United entered the international break by winning what was arguably their most important match of the season at Everton on Saturday.

The under-pressure Reds came from behind to beat the Toffees thanks to Bruno Fernandes’ double and Edinson Cavani’s first goal for United.

Chong also praised the influence of Juan Mata on his early career development and revealed he is still in touch with the Spaniard on a regular basis.

“Juan Mata was amazing on and off the pitch,” he added.

“I can highlight many positively. Everyone helped me a lot. I am still in contact with them, and they often ask me how I am.

“(I respond that) everything is fine for me and that I want to develop myself further in Bremen.”
