Sterling makes Foden and Greenwood prediction after England debuts

2 min read

Raheem Sterling says he is excited about playing with both Mason Greenwood and Phil Foden for England.

Both youngsters made their England debuts in the 1-0 win over Iceland, which saw Sterling net a late penalty to earn his country the three points.

Sterling is well aware of the talents of his Manchester City teammate Foden but says he also knows what a good player Manchester United attacker Greenwood is.

Speaking to Sky Sports, Sterling said both will be important players for England going forward.

“I knew about Mason before he was with the Manchester United senior team.

“He’s a player I’m excited by. I’m really glad to be playing with him.

“I know he’s a player that will develop over the years and become a top-quality player.

“Phil, as well, he’s a player that gets on the ball, finds spaces, one or two touches and he’s sharp.

“There’s a bright future ahead, but we just need to keep growing as a team.”

England were frustrated by Iceland for long periods but Sterling said the side were under no illusions that it would be a difficult game before his late penalty.

He said: “We always knew it would be difficult.

“Our first game with no fans here for the national team, we’ve done it with our clubs, but it being the first time with the national team, we knew it was going to be difficult.

“We had to challenge ourselves, find something deep within. We said if there were any setbacks in the game, like conceding a goal.

“We didn’t expect the red card – it happened – but we kept trying to create chances. We got the penalty in the end, and we shouldn’t have conceded the sloppy penalty in the end, but we got the luck in the end.”
