Solskjaer makes Ronaldo, Rooney and Tevez claim about Rashford and Martial

2 min read

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer believes the partnership between Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial is more similar to the understanding Cristiano Ronaldo, Wayne Rooney, and Carlos Tevez enjoyed than the telepathy between his former teammatesDwight Yorke and Andy Cole had.

Yorke and Cole plundered 53 goals between them in United’s Treble-winning season and Martial and Rashford were likened to the duo in their first year of playing together for United.

Rashford, 22, and Martial, 24, have tallied 22 goals apiece in the first season where two United players have broken the 20-goal barrier since Dimitar Berbatov and Javier Hernandez in 2010-11.

Martial and Rashford have created seven goals for each other this term and been joined in an unchanged attacking trident by Mason Greenwood in United’s last six Premier League games. Solskjaer sees parallels with the English, European and world title triumvirate of Ronaldo, Rooney, and Tevez from 2007-09.

“With regards to Yorke, Cole, Sheringham and Solskjaer, I think Martial and Rashford are creating their own little relationship. I think it’s a different type, of course, because they’re playing in different positions; more rotating, more like the Rooney, Ronaldo and Tevez one, with Mason in there of course.

“We just want them to find their own way of playing, so very happy with the contribution of the two of them.”

United take on Chelsea in the FA Cup semi-final on Sunday in the first of three games in eight days, having already played twice in the league this week. Chelsea will have had 48 hours extra preparation for the Wembley tie as they hosted Norwich City on Tuesday whereas United travelled to Crystal Palace on Thursday.

Solskjaer is familiar with the intensity of a run-in from the Treble campaign and, like in 1998-99, United have embarked on a long unbeaten run that currently stands at 19 games.

“I think having games and winning loads of games, of course it creates a momentum, and they’re looking forward to the next opportunity to play again, so for us it’s been fantastic to have had so many games in a short space of time, and everyone feels involved.”
