Solskjaer has built the best Man United side in 10 years, says Sociedad boss

3 min read

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has built the best Manchester United side of the last decade, says Real Sociedad boss Imanol Alguacil ahead of his side’s Europa League Round of 32 second leg.

Sociedad were dismantled by United’s counter-attack last week as Solskjaer saw his team score four goals without reply and all but secure their place in the last 16.

The pair meet again on Thursday night, with Alguacil demanding that his team restore pride after a desperate first leg.

And when asked about the quality of his opponents, the Real Sociedad boss heralded their quality, praising Solskjaer for building the best United team in 10 years – despite the Reds sealing the Premier League crown in both 2010/11 and 2012/13 under Sir Alex Ferguson.

“It’s the best Man United in the last 10 years,” he said in his pre-match press conference.

“They’re battling with Man City for the Premiership. They’re really world-class physically, and quality-wise, they’re really good.

“We know how difficult it is to cause nerves in Man United even if we score that first goal. But we want to be competitive.

“We’re going to try and go out there to win the game but, above all, we need to prove ourselves that we are not that far (from United).

“We might be far from Man United but we’re not as far as the result of the first leg suggests.”

On what his team can aim for when facing a four-goal deficit, Alguacil added: “I have to say it could be almost impossible to go through but I believe that my team can compete.

“I think we can clean our image, win the game and learn from what happened in Turin.

“We really have to be down to earth and know who we are facing.”

On his team’s approach to a second leg with a seemingly unassailable lead, Solskjaer said that he will rotate a little but does not want his players to become complacent as they still have to pass the test against a good team.

“First of all, it’s a test because we know we’re playing a good team,” he said. “We know we played really well, away in Italy, so we treat this one as a game we want to win.

“Of course, there will be a couple of changes because of the relentless fixture schedule.

“I don’t think anyone will be surprised by that, but we have to play a good game and keep building momentum, and every game is a chance to stake a claim to be in the team for next week.”
