Solskjaer disagrees with Mourinho assessment of Man United success

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer insists Manchester United should never be happy finishing second in a Premier League season.

United have shown slim signs of progress under the Norwegian coach this season and are still on course to go one better than their third place finish a year ago.

Solskjaer is still in with a chance of lifting silverware too, with United favourites to win the Europa League after a comfortable 2-0 first leg win over Granada at the quarter-final stage.

Potential success in Europe could well define the overall mood around Old Trafford come the end of the season, but Solskjaer insists United should never be happy on a domestic front unless they win the Premier League.

Two years ago Jose Mourinho stated that finishing second in the Premier League to Pep Guardiola’s record-breaking Man City side was one of the best achievements of his career, but Solskjaer doesn’t agree with that train of thought.

“You can’t say that is an achievement,” Solskjaer replied when asked if finishing second would be a fantastic achievement. “Our ambition is a lot more than second place. I said that when I wasn’t at the club – you can never be happy with that and we’re not. Don’t get me wrong, our ambition is to catch the team in front of us.

“At the moment they (City) have had a fantastic season, they have had three or four of them, and we know the challenge ahead of us. But we have to take it on. If you don’t, then you’re in the wrong place because that is what I am going for.

“Players have to really take that on with the sacrifices they have to make and the work they have to do. Blood, sweat and tears have to be put down because this is the best league in the world – and the most difficult.”
