Scott McTominay makes Manchester United promise after Tottenham loss

2 min read

Scott McTominay promised that Manchester United will respond positively to their humiliating defeat by Tottenham.

United endured an afternoon to forget at Old Trafford as they were dismantled by Spurs, with Harry Kane and Son Heung-min in the goals.

The 6-1 defeat is United’s joint-heaviest loss in the Premier League as Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, Ed Woodward and the Glazers took the brunt of fans’ fury after the game.

Midfielder McTominay, however, pledged that United’s players will look at themselves and react well to the painful reverse.

“This football club is absolutely massive and for us to perform like that is nowhere near good enough,” he told MUTV. “Believe me, something will be done about that. And when we get back everyone will be firmly focused on what we have to do in the next stage of the season.

“It will have to be sorted out. The Premier League is so strong now, you see that. And for us, a result like that hurts massively.

“That’s the first time I’ve been on the end of a result like that and, believe me, inside it’s the worst feeling I’ve ever had. But that’s football. You have to accept it, move on, keep your chest out and don’t duck out of the way of responsibility. You have to take them front on and move forward.

“And we know it’s not about speaking to people and hearing what people say, it’s about focusing on ourselves.”

United’s next game is not until October 17th when they travel to Newcastle in the league, though they look set to be boosted by the arrivals of Alex Telles and Edinson Cavani ahead of deadline day.

But McTominay is eager for United to put in a performance the next time they get the chance.

He added: “The next game can come whenever it comes. We have to focus on our roles and responsibilities as a football club and we’ll take it from there. But I can assure you there will be a big reaction, first and foremost from the manager and from the players and staff.”
