Paul Scholes wants Manchester United to sign a ‘dominant’ centre-back partner for Harry Maguire in the summer to compete for the Premier League title next season.
United climbed back up to second-place in the table with a 3-1 win over Newcastle United at Old Trafford.
However, Allan Saint-Maximin capitalised on some uncertainty in United’s defence to level the game for the travelling Magpies.
United are now back to within 10 points of Manchester City, who comfortably top the table as things stand, and Scholes has told his former club the areas they need to address in the summer in order to reduce that gap, while he also singled out eight key men.
“I said before the game, I think they’re missing a really dominant centre-back,” the United legend said on BT Sport. “The team that win leagues have real leaders in the back four, I think Maguire possibly will be but they need someone with him who can be dominant in that position, can bully a centre-forward, can demand from the rest of the squad around him, on and off the pitch.
“I don’t think we’re far off at all. I think the attackers, the central midfielders – Paul Pogba looks a brilliant player, the player we hoped we’d bought.
” Fred and McTominay are doing well; McTominay especially and the attacking players – young Greenwood, who’s coming of age now, really, he’s still a young player. The more games he plays, the more star quality we’re going to see – this lad can be a superstar.
“They’ve got Rashford, Martial, who’s struggling a little bit with confidence, but he has real quality. You’ve got the experience of Cavani, you’ve got goals in the team and I’ve not even spoken about Fernandes.
