Scholes in agreeement with Fowler about Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s Manchester United

3 min read

Paul Scholes believes the current Manchester United team are similar to Liverpool in the 1990s.

Scholes, who was speaking to the Merseyside club legend Robbie Fowler, was asked if he agreed with the ex-Liverpool striker about a comparison to one of the teams he played in during the ’90s.

Fowler made his debut for United‘s arch rivals in 1993 and between then and the turn of the millennium, he played under three different managers.

In that time, the highest position in the Premier League that Liverpool managed was third – both in the 1995/96 and 1997/98 seasons.

Fowler has now made a comparison to that side he played in, who he said could beat anyone on their day, to the current United team that sit second in the table.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side have suffered a blip in form since drawing 0-0 with Liverpool at Anfield last month and has subsequently seen them fall adrift of the in-form Manchester City.

The ex-Liverpool striker said on the Robbie Fowler Podcast: “Scholesy, can I give you my 10 pence for what it’s worth in terms of Man United? I think they’re probably similar to in terms of what we were, Liverpool, in the 90s.

“A very good team on our day and we could beat anyone but when it came to the crunch – we sort of lost against teams we should have beaten.

Manchester United made heavy weather of their 3-1 win over Newcastle, eventually getting the job done at Old Trafford.

Marcus Rashford, Daniel James and Bruno Fernandes were on the scoresheet as United got back to winning ways in the league. They have a Europa League second leg vs Real Sociedad on Thursday.

“I think that’s where Man United’s problem is now. They will compete against Liverpool and Chelsea – all these top teams – but then they’ll lose to a Palace or a West Brom, Sheffield United.

“You’ve got maybe another 29 years of this, mate.”

Scholes laughed and replied: “Not a chance, Rob, not a chance.

“I always felt like your Liverpool team was a great team, a really talented team, but I always felt, it always seemed like you’d go on a four, five or six-game spell where you would mess everything up.

“You’re right, this team, they are a bit like that, aren’t they? They’ve won one out of their last five games after going top of the league.

“It’s exactly that type of stuff – you can’t win leagues like that, can you? You need to have the level of consistency right through and winning big games is massive: beating a Liverpool or a Man City.

“Them games are massive and United haven’t been able to do that yet.”

United are back in Premier League action on Sunday afternoon as they make the trip down to west London to face Chelsea at Stamford Bridge.
