Scholes agrees with Neville about Manchester United transfer plan

3 min read

Manchester United legends Paul Scholes and Gary Neville agree on which player should be the club’s top target during the summer transfer window.

As attentions turn to the upcoming recruitment drive, several high-profile names have been linked with marquee and big-money moves to Old Trafford – including Erling Haaland and England captain Harry Kane.

Speculation over the future of both frontmen has continued to mount in the past few days.

Indeed, after Tottenham striker Kane issued a resolute stance on his future while away on international duty with the Three Lions, reports of proposed transfer talks between Haaland’s representatives and six elite European clubs started to circulate.

Asked if he would need to leave Spurs in order to win trophies, Kane, 27, replied: “I think that’s a hard question to answer right now. To be thinking about rumours would be damaging in terms of my own performance.”

“I try to stay out of that speculation as much as possible. I’m fully focused on doing my job on the pitch from now until the end of the summer and then we’ll see where we go from there.”

Take from that what you will.

However, while Kane to United has long-since been discussed, former Old Trafford favourites Scholes and Neville think the club should continue to pursue number one target Haaland from Borussia Dortmund.

A staggering total of 49 goals in 50 games for the Bundesliga club has seen the Norway sensation become one of the hottest properties in world football – as talk of a summer bidding war for his signature gathers pace.

His contract at Dortmund is said to contain a £65million release clause that will become active next season.

But with La Liga giants Barcelona and Real Madrid set to go heavy-handed during the upcoming transfer window, figures responsible for transfers at Old Trafford have been urged to make their own move.

After former United teammate Neville issued the above response during a Q&A session on his social media profile, Scholes made a similar suggestion in an interview on YouTube.

Speaking about Haaland, he claimed: “He’s the best striker out there in the world, without a shadow of a doubt. It’s ridiculous what he’s doing.

“If you sign him now, you’ll get 10 years of him. With Harry Kane, at 28, 29, he’s in the peak of his career, but you’re talking two or three years as a top-class striker.

“When you get to 31, 32, you maybe lose your legs a little bit, start to drop deep as he’s started to do a little bit now actually.

“As for Haaland, he’s going to cost a lot more money. They’re both going to cost a lot of money, but I think if you’re looking to the future in the next few years, Haaland has to be the one.”

In comparison to Haaland’s near goal-per-game return in Germany, Kane has scored 160 times in the Premier League for Spurs, having made 234 appearances for them in the competition.

Their strike-rate at international level is comparable, too, with six in ten marking a promising start to life in Norway colours for Haaland, while England skipper Kane has an impressive 34 goals in 53 outings for his country.

Both players, should they move on this summer, are expected to command a transfer fee amounting to nine figures.
