Sancho to Man United: Transfer latest, Giggs verdict and Depay deal

3 min read

Manchester United have made it their priority to sign Jadon Sancho from Borussia Dortmund this summer.

The England international is regarded as one of the most exciting young players in world football and starred in the Bundesliga once again last term for BVB, who finished second in the table to Bayern Munich.

Sancho struck 16 goals and registered 17 assists for Dortmund in the German top flight in 2019/20, and he also netted a further four times in the Champions League.

Such form has attracted the attention of a host of top European clubs, but it’s United who are front of the queue to sign the 20-year-old, and he is keen to make the move to Old Trafford this summer.

It will not be easy to prise Sancho away from Dortmund, with a club-record fee almost certainly required if United are to secure the winger’s signature.

Here are all the latest media reports on Jadon Sancho to Manchester United.

MEN: Where United stand on Sancho move

Our chief Manchester United writer Samuel Luckhurst has put together a full run-down of the state of affairs on Sancho’s move to Manchester United.

It’s understood Sancho is the Reds’ top target this summer, having missed out on his signature 12 months ago after failing to secure Champions League football.

United initially wanted to sign the England star directly from rivals ManchesterCity three years ago but, somewhat unsurprisingly, were blocked in their attempts.

Sancho ended up moving to Borussia Dortmund and now, three years later, a switch to the red side of Manchester is likely with United the winger’s preferred destination.

Dortmund have briefed that their asking price is €120 million (£108m) – which would be a club and Premier League record, as well as a record fee for a British player.

With no other club in for Sancho at that price, United effectively have a free run.

However, MEN Sport understands they have not yet launched a bid and will remain patient in their pursuit despite perceived scare tactics bring used by Dortmund.

MEN: Giggs urges United to sign Sancho

Manchester United legend Ryan Giggs has urged his former club to go out and sign Sancho this summer, as well as Aston Villa star Jack Grealish.

Sancho is top of United’s summer shopping list, MEN Sport understands, and Giggs believes the 20-year-old has the talents required to thrive at Old Trafford.

Speaking to Webby and O’Neill,United legend Giggs explained: “Sancho is quick, direct but also an intelligent player.

“What I like about him is, when he gets into those areas for the final ball, he doesn’t panic, which is what a lot of wide players sometimes do.

“He picks out the right pass and is someone who can counter-attack if we’re going to play that but also, if a team sits back, he can beat players and make things happen.

“Two signings (Sancho and Grealish) that may be available and, if they are and we’re able to get them, then I would go and get them.”

MEN: United will receive notice if Dortmund move to Sancho replacement

Manchester United will be informed by French side Lyon if Borussia Dortmund make an approach for Memphis Depay, who has been tipped to replace the England star should he complete his move to Old Trafford.

Depay was sold to Lyon in January 2017 by former Reds boss Jose Mourinho after he failed to make a substantial impact in his 53 appearances for the club.

However, wary of the Netherlands international’s potential, United inserted a buy-back clause into the deal which gives them first refusal on the 26-year-old should Lyon decide to sell.

That moment may arrive this summer after the Ligue 1 club missed out on European football.

Dortmund have been credited with interest by German outlet Bild but, if they did make an offer for Depay, Lyon would be obligated to inform United.
