Salford City vs Manchester United U-21s LIVE

1 min read

Manchester United Under-21s begin their competitive campaign in the EFL Trophy tonight as they make the short trip to face Salford City at the Peninsula Stadium.

It’s a fixture laced with narrative, with the Class of 92 owning a significant stake in League Two Salford, with Nicky Butt having a foot in both camps as a part-owner of the Ammies and United’s head of first-team development, working closely with the academy.

Gary and Phil Neville, Ryan Giggs, Paul Scholes and David Beckham also own the ambitious Salford City, with former United links on the pitch in midfielder Darron Gibson and forward James Wilson.

Neil Wood’s United side have played a string of pre-season friendlies leading up to the start of competitive action and they did well in this competition last year, topping a group by winning away at established EFL sides in Rotherham, Doncaster and Lincoln, before losing 3-2 at Tranmere in the last-32.

They will be hoping to have similar success this season in a competition that is vital to giving young academy players exposure to senior football.
