Ryan Giggs has no qualms about Manchester United’s impending signing of Edinson Cavani and has backed him to be a big success at the club.
United look set to complete a deal for free agent Cavani, who left Paris Saint-Germain this summer. The Uruguay international, 33, will arrive at Old Trafford on a short-term deal, with the main financial outlay being agents’ fees and the player’s wages.
Some United fans have criticised the deal, given United’s stated policy of targeting young and hungry players, such as recent arrivals Donny van de Beek and Bruno Fernandes, and long-time target Jadon Sancho.
But club legend Giggs is a big admirer of Cavani and expects him to thrive under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer at United.
“It goes without saying he’s a world star,” said Wales boss Giggs at a press conference. “My second game [as Wales manager] was against Uruguay and Cavani scored and I was really impressed with his work rate and quality.
“It’s about how quickly he beds in. We have seen South Americans who haven’t really come and done it like [Radamel] Falcao, [Angel] Di Maria and [Alexis] Sanchez, but Cavani, with his work rate, you expect him to make it.”
Giggs believes Cavani brings United something different to their current forward line of Anthony Martial, Marcus Rashford and Mason Greenwood.
He added: “I think United needed a centre-forward, and needed that target man to score the goals and make that difference. Hopefully he can do that.
“I think Cavani will have no problem with the size of the club. He’s got the experience to handle that. But eyes will be on him straight away and if he does come he’ll have to hit the ground running because the pressure will be on.”
