Roma are prepared to resurrect their interest in Manchester United’s Chris Smalling following a successful takeover by new owner Dan Friedkin.

The England international was deemed surplus to requirements by Ole Gunnar Solskjaer last summer following the arrival of Harry Maguire from Leicester City.

Smalling responded by excelling over the course of his loan spell but Roma were unable to raise the funds necessary to turn his move into a permanent one.

The 30-year-old will be unable to play during the latter stages of the Europa League after negotiations between his parent club and Roma broke down, but he could yet return to the Italian capital in time for the start of next season, according to reports in Italy.

With United focusing their attentions on attempting to sign Jadon Sancho from Borussia Dortmund, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has not ruled out the possibility of Smalling remaining at Old Trafford should he not have the budget required to add to his defence.

Smalling, however, is keen to remain in Serie A but Roma will have to get closer to United’s initial asking price of around €20m.

‘I think Chris has shown over his Manchester United career how valuable he is at Manchester United,’ Solskjaer said earlier this week addressing the former Fulham star’s future.

‘This season was about him being a regular and going to Roma and showing how good a centre-back he is, I wanted to give Harry [Maguire], Vic[tor Lindelof] and maybe Axel [Tuanzebe] a chance.

‘It was best for him to go and play for a year in Roma and he has shown he will be valuable, I’ve been speaking to Chris throughout. I’ve been delighted with his season.’
