Roma are set to submit a new bid for Chris Smalling, but they also want Manchester United defender Timothy Fosu-Mensah on loan, according to reports.
Smalling enjoyed a successful season-long loan spell at the Italian club last term, where he rediscovered his best form.
The English centre-back is keen on a move back to the Serie A and Roma are stepping up their efforts to re-sign him on a permanent deal.
According to Fabrizio Romano, Roma are planning to match United’s valuation of around €20 million (£18m) for Smalling, while they are also keen on taking Fosu-Mensah on loan.
The Italian giants are also one of the clubs that want Diogo Dalot on loan, but United are said to be only interested in offloading the full-back on a permanent deal.
Fosu-Mensah started ahead of Aaron Wan-Bissaka in the Red Devils’ 3-1 defeat to Crystal Palace in their season opener.
The 22-year-old graduated from United’s academy in 2016, but has struggled for game time, making just 28 appearances in total for the club.
Since their loss to Palace, United have won three games on the bounce as they play their way to fitness after a lack of pre-season.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side have been drawn into a difficult Champions League group as they face Paris Saint-Germain, RB Leipzig and Istanbul Basaksehir.
