Rio Ferdinand believes that Harry Kane would be a fine addition to the Manchester United squad but urged his former side to sign a central defender as their first priority.
United are looking to improve their squad in a number of areas this summer, with a new partner for Harry Maguire, a central midfielder and a right-sided forward on the agenda.
Elsewhere, Kieran Trippier is back under consideration and United could look to sign a centre-forward if the right opportunity presents itself.
“They need to recruit well in this window in the right areas. I think they need a centre-back, a right winger and maybe even a centre-forward,” he told Goal.
Asked about the possibility of snatching Harry Kane from Tottenham, he added: “It would be nice wouldn’t it. But my first position to buy would be centre-back.”
United’s first-choice central defensive target is Real Madrid’s Raphael Varane, who is a candidate for a move as he enters the final 12 months of his contract.
Villarreal defender Pau Torres is another defender under consideration but any move for the Spain international would likely occur towards the end of the window, following the European Championship.
The international tournament is likely to delay United’s more significant pieces of business, with a wealth of targets representing their nations, including England pair Declan Rice and Jadon Sancho.
