Rio Ferdinand makes Manchester United prediction amid lack of transfer activity

2 min read

Former Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand believes his old club will not be able to compete for the Premier League title if they do not sign any more players before the 11pm Monday deadline.

United have made just one signing – Donny van de Beek from Ajax for £40m – so far during this window, but have tried to add to their squad.

Jadon Sancho has been a target for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer throughout the window, with United set to make one last-ditch attempt to sign the Borussia Dortmund star.

United have not given up hope of signing Sancho but could turn to loan option Ousmane Dembele of Barcelona.

Dortmund sporting director Michael Zorc said last week on Sancho: “Everything there is to tell on this matter from our end has already been said. And that won’t change over the next three days.”

Dembele has also been linked with United, but with time running out, Solskjaer’s side will have to be quick.

Ferdinand believes that if United do want to challenge for the Premier League title this season, then they will need to make further additions.

When asked if United can challenge for the title without further additions, Ferdinand told BT Sport: “No. Not in my eyes. Champions League will be the target realistically.”

United have played twice so far in the league this season – winning one and losing one – as they prepare to face Tottenham on Sunday.

Jose Mourinho will return to Old Trafford, where he spent two years from 2016 until 2018.
