Richarlison responds to Edinson Cavani red card during Uruguay vs Brazil

2 min read

Richarlison has defended Edinson Cavani after the striker was sent off for Uruguay in their defeat to Brazil.

With Uruguay 2-0 down, Manchester United attacker Cavani caught his Everton counterpart on the ankle with a late tackle that initially only resulted in a yellow card.

VAR upgraded the punishment to a red card, leading to an astonished look from Cavani.

Speaking post-match, Richarlison, who netted the Selecao’s second goal in the victory, said he had sympathy for Cavani.

But he admitted the tackle could have resulted in an injury on another day.

“It was a ball dispute and of course he went over the top,” he told CBF TV.

“If my foot was planted there on the floor, maybe it could even have broken my ankle.

“But I don’t think he meant it. I think he went there to get the ball but missed and took my foot. It’s a normal game situation.”

Whilst Cavani was sent off, there was some good news for United from the fixture, with Alex Telles fit enough for a place on the bench.

Telles was an unused substitute in the 2-0 victory, indicating he is slowly returning to fitness after a prolonged absence due to suffering from coronavirus.

United entered the international break by winning what was arguably their most important match of the season at Everton on Saturday.

The under-pressure Reds came from behind to beat the Toffees thanks to Bruno Fernandes’ double and Edinson Cavani’s first goal for United.

The left-back has not played for United since their 2-1 win over PSG in October but came off the bench for Brazil in their 1-0 win over Venezuela on Saturday.

It was confirmed earlier this week that he has tested negative for the virus and he is now available to face West Brom in the first game after the international break.

Cavani will also be available for the game, with his international red card not applicable for club matches.
