Former Manchester United coach Rene Meulensteen has lavished praise on the versatility and ‘great personality’ of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s new recruit Donny van de Beek.

The 23-year-old completed the £40million switch from Ajax to Old Trafford on a five-year deal.

Van de Beek is United’s first major signing of the transfer window and will offer Solskjaer a different option in midfield.

The Netherlands international has 10 caps for his country and an impressive tally of 41 goals in 175 appearances for Ajax.

Sir Alex Ferguson’s former first-team coach, Meulensteen, backed Van de Beek to be a useful asset for the Red Devils.

‘He’s a really versatile midfielder with a great personality,’ Meulensten told talkSPORT.

‘He’s got that quality that not many attacking midfielders have, that timing of getting into the box at the right times.

‘He can score goals, he can make assists. All in all, it’s a really good signing.’

Solskjaer will have the difficult task of trying to fit attack-minded midfielders Van de Beek, Bruno Fernandes and Paul Pogba into the same team.

Fernandes was United’s shining light last season and helped fire them to a third-placed finish in the league, and Meulensteen can see their new signing combining with the Portugal international to great effect.

‘They can’t rely on Bruno Fernandes, whose been brilliant, there’s been so much said about him and rightly so because he changed basically the whole way United play,’ Meulensteen added.

‘Before that it was a lot of huff and puff there wasn’t a lot of pace in the play, he brought it to their game.

‘Van de Beek will add to that as well. I’m 100 per cent sure they will be able to play together really, really well.

‘For Ole it’s the jigsaw, is he going with one more defensive midfielder? Or is he going with all of them including Pogba?’
