Pogba’s reaction to Cavani winner for Man United vs Southampton

3 min read

Paul Pogba joined in the celebrations after Manchester United produced a stunning fightback against Southampton.

Pogba was ruled out of Sunday’s Premier League clash at St Mary’s due to an ankle injury and could only watch on as Southampton raced into a two-goal lead, courtesy of Jan Bednarek and James Ward-Prowse.

But United came roaring back after the break, largely thanks to half-time substitute Edinson Cavani. The Uruguayan set up Bruno Fernandes to halve the deficit before scoring twice himself to seal a dramatic 3-2 victory.

Cavani’s winning goal came two minutes into added time, sparking wild celebrations among United players and fans alike.

Pogba was not at the ground but posted a video of him watching a slow-motion replay of Cavani’s headed winner on television, via Instagram.

In the clip, the Frenchman can be heard repeating Cavani’s nickname: “El Matador! El Matador!”

Pogba tagged his team-mate in the post and included two fire emojis alongside the caption: “El Matador”.

Speaking after the match, United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer revealed that Pogba could be available to play in the Champions League group match against Paris Saint-Germain on Wednesday.

“It (Pogba’s injury) is improving and hopefully he will be training on grass today or tomorrow,” said Solskjaer. “Hopefully ready for Wednesday.”

Solskjaer also hailed Cavani, adding: “Great impact of course. He is a number nine who wants to be in between the posts, he is always on the move.

“On the training pitch, in the dressing room and during meal times, how meticulous he is… He knows what he wants to eat, how much he wants to recover – everything!

“Sometimes it hurts and sometimes it doesn’t but to score you have to be in there.”
