Phil Neville ‘is on the brink of being announced as the new manager of David Beckham’s Inter Miami’

Phil Neville is closing in on becoming the new head coach of Inter Miami, according to reports.

The MLS side want the 43-year-old to become their new boss ahead of the new season – which starts on February 29 – after former manager Diego Alonso and the club mutually agreed to part ways last week.

And according to The Times, the FA will announce that Neville is standing down from his post as England Women head coach in the next 24 hours, clearing the path for him to link up with Inter Miami – who are part-owned by his old Manchester United and England team-mate David Beckham.

Sportsmail also revealed last week that Neville – whose contract expires in July – is excited about the prospect of a new challenge and it is understood that preliminary discussions took place last week.

But an immediate appointment for the post in America would leave Team GB at this summer’s Olympic Games in a spot of bother, with Baroness Sue Campbell confirming last week Neville had been lined up to take charge of the women’s team in Tokyo.

The FA have unveiled Sarina Wiegman as Neville’s England successor, but she will only take over after leading Holland at the Olympics, meaning coaches for England’s remaining fixtures this season as well as the Games need to be sourced.

But Neville’s attentions are now likely to turn to fulfilling Beckham’s big ambitions for Inter Miami, who only finished 10th in the 14-team Eastern Conference last season.

Beckham wanted to sign Edinson Cavani when the striker’s contract expired at Paris Saint-Germain but could not conclude a deal with his representatives.

Neville’s predecessor Alonso was announced as the club’s first ever head coach in December 2019, having won three titles as head coach of Monterrey in Mexico’s Liga MX, including the 2019 CONCACAF Champions League.

Following the season’s return after the enforced break due to coronavirus, the club performed poorly to the end of the season and finished bottom of their ‘MLS is back’ group.

That meant the Inter Miami won just seven of their 23 matches, losing 13 times, a sequence that has called Alonso’s future into question.

Neville has also had his critics leading England, but did take them to the 2019 World Cup semi-finals and victory in the SheBelieves Cup since taking over three years ago.
