Penarol give Pellistri to Manchester United transfer update

2 min read

The vice-president of Uruguayan club Penarol has revealed he expects Facundo Pellistri’s transfer to Manchester United to be completed on deadline day.

Rodolfo Cantino believes the proposed transfer for the 18-year-old winger to head to Old Trafford will go through today, providing United meet his release clause.

MEN Sport understands discussions between the two clubs are ongoing for Pellistri and the player may arrive for a fee of around €10million. United have tracked Pellistri for over a year and it is believed he would go straight into the first-team squad if he joins. His signing could come at the same time as a deal for another 18-year-old wide man in Atalanta’s Amad Traore, though that deal could be delayed until January.

Cantino revealed the deal was not yet done and dusted but expects it to go through soon.

“It’s still not closed, but we expect it to be done in the coming hours,” he told Sport Witness. “If they trigger the release clause, of course he’s going now.”

The right wing signings do not quite fulfil the aspirations of many United fans, with the club having tracked Jadon Sancho for the entirety of the summer without success. They have explored a deal for Barcelona wide man Ousmane Dembele on a potential loan deal.

But Pellistri appears to be the most likely summer winger signing, on top of Donny van de Beek, Alex Telles and Edinson Cavani. Telles and Cavani are expected to be unveiled soon after undergoing medicals on Sunday.
