Paul Scholes names three players Man United need to eliminate AC Milan next week

3 min read

Paul Scholes warned Manchester United they face a tough ask in the second leg of their Europa League tie with AC Milan if their forwards are not fit.

The Reds conceded a last-gasp equaliser in the first leg of the round-of-16 match on Thursday, letting in what could be a crucial away goal in a 1-1 draw after Amad had opened the scoring.

United had Marcus Rashford and Edinson Cavani out injured for the game, with Anthony Martial being replaced at half-time with a hip problem.

Speaking post-match on BT Sport, Scholes said being away in the second leg should suit United, but he admitted he was worried about how the game would go if some injured players aren’t back.

He said: “Disappointing, but that sums up Man United, that’s where we’re at. That’s the inconsistency, to win a league, to win trophies, you have to be consistent throughout and you think of the points they’ve dropped at home.

“They’re in trouble in this game now, they would have snapped your hand off for a 1-1 tonight after the way they performed and going away next week, without Martial and Rashford – I tell you what: it could be tricky.”

He added: “United are brilliant away from home, we’ve seen thr record they’ve got. They will be allowed more space over there.

“I think the key is having forwards fit – if it’s Greenwood, James and Amad, I’d be slightly concerned about whether they can go there and be free-scoring like they were against Sociedad.

“They need those players fit; what was wrong with Martial tonight, I’m not quite sure, we didn’t really see anything happen. Is he going to be ready for next week?

“I think Rashford will be okay, from what it looked like on Sunday, it looked like a slight ankle tweak, I think Ole was just a bit cautious with him tonight – get him ready for Sunday and also for next week.

“There’s Cavani as well, you just worry about the experience going to Milan, if you start with the front three that finished tonight: have they got the quality to go over there and score goals?”
