Paul Scholes says he is ‘desperate’ for Manchester United to sign Harry Kane ahead of Jadon Sancho and doesn’t think right-wing is a ‘major priority’ in terms of strengthening the squad.

United are keen on recruiting the Borussia Dortmund winger this transfer window and reports claimed earlier this week that a deal was close to being finalised.

However, Dortmund’s Managing Director Hans-Joachim Watzke insisted on Wednesday that there has been no contact between the two clubs over a deal and they expect the 20-year-old to stay at the club for next season.

Sancho enjoyed the most prolific season of his career, registering 17 Bundesliga goals and 16 assists.

United legend Scholes believes that with the likes of Marcus Rashford, Anthony Martial and Mason Greenwood all able to operate in wide positions, he would prefer Tottenham’s natural goalscorer Harry Kane to come through the doors at Old Trafford.

‘I don’t think it’s a major priority,’ Scholes told BT Sport. ‘Don’t get me wrong, Sancho is a top quality footballer, I think he would improve any team in world football.

‘He will score lots of goals, he will make lots of goals, there’s no doubt he would be a big asset to the team.

‘I just think we already have three forwards that are very similar to Sancho, possibly not quite as good as him, but potentially I think they could be.

‘If he was a centre-forward, if that’s Harry Kane you’re talking about now, I’d be more desperate to sign him than Sancho at this stage.

‘Although don’t get me wrong as I said, he’s a top quality footballer. I just think United need a No.9, a real centre-forward, a real goalscorer and Harry Kane would be that man for me.

‘But then again you have to think what does Ole want? He doesn’t seem like he wants that type of centre-forward at the minute.

‘He’s got Ighalo who is more of a No.9, he seems to be using him in the last 15/20 minutes when things aren’t quite going that well.

‘So maybe Ighalo could be an option for a cheaper price as a squad filler, but Sancho would improve any team.’
