Paul Pogba sets Manchester United new target before Liverpool game

2 min read

Paul Pogba has told Manchester United’s players they cannot afford to rest on their laurels after going top of the Premier League.

Pogba’s volleyed effort was enough for United to beat Burnley 1-0 and put Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side three points clear at the league’s summit. It’s the first time since 2013 that United have been in such a league position and they head to Liverpool on Sunday looking to stretch their lead over Jurgen Klopp’s second-placed side to six points.

But Pogba refused to get carried away, urging focus from United, though he told Sky Sports that he was enjoying his football right now.

“I’m always happy when I win, so obviously today we won so I’m very happy,” said a smiling Pogba. “Happy that we played well and happy that we’re at the top. But as I say, still a long way to go, we have big games coming up so we have to focus on that too.”

The words will be music to the ears of United fans, though it is still anticipated that Pogba will leave Old Trafford at the end of the campaign. His agent Mino Raiola has made no secret of Pogba’s desire to move on, though he could do so with a league winner’s medal in his pocket.

Reflecting on the Burnley game, Pogba praised his fellow United players for their fighting spirit and focus throughout a tense contest.

“You could see the game was going both ways,” he added. “They have a style of play [that] we know, they’re very strong and we knew it would be difficult. We had to just focus on ourselves and we knew the goal would come. Good focus from everyone and we have to keep doing this.

“The game today was very hard, very difficult, and obviously we wanted to win but it’s not easy to play here. But we got the three points and we’re happy for that, but still a long way. Now we’re going to have to focus again until the end of the season.”
