Paul Merson says there’s ‘no point’ in Jesse Lingard returning to Manchester United and feels West Ham is the ‘perfect move’ for him.

Lingard has been in superb form since joining the Hammers on loan in January, scoring six goals and providing three assists in just eight Premier League starts.

He hadn’t featured in the competition for Manchester United in the first half of the season and he looks set to move on this summer.

With his contract expiring at the end of next season, it looks likely that United chiefs will cash in on the England international rather than risk losing him on a free in a year’s time.

West Ham have made it clear they want to keep the 28-year-old beyond this season and Merson thinks a permanent transfer to east London makes total sense.

‘I don’t see him going back to Manchester United,’ Merson told Sky Sports.

‘He wants to play football. He’s gone to West Ham to play football, now he’s got the love back a bit.

‘He lost a little bit of the love of the football, I think he lost his way a little bit. Now he’s loving football again, he’s playing. You want to play every week.

‘There’s no point him going back to Manchester United and playing in the Carabao Cup games. For me, I think he’s got a chance of going. He’s fresh.

‘If I was him [Lingard], I would [go to West Ham]. It ticks the box for him.

‘He’s the star man there, he gets a lot of the ball. They play to his strengths. For me, I think it works for him. I think it’s the perfect move.’

Asked how much Lingard would cost West Ham, Merson added: ‘I don’t know. It’s going up every week – that’s the problem!

‘He’s scoring goals, he’s making goals. Fair play to David Moyes. He doesn’t get a lot of credit he deserves, he’s got a team there at West Ham.

‘This team now, they’re breaking with pace. This is how David Moyes wants to play.

‘If Liverpool and Chelsea and Tottenham had West Ham’s fixtures, they’d be a shoo-in.

‘They’ve got the best fixtures. They’ve got eight cup finals. This is once in a lifetime. This won’t happen again.
