Paul Merson is confident goal machine Erling Haaland will fire Chelsea to the Premier League title if he joins Thomas Tuchel’s Stamford Bridge revolution and snubs the likes of Manchester United.

The prolific Borussia Dortmund striker was on the verge of being reunited with his former Molde coach Ole Gunnar Solskjaer at Old Trafford 18 months ago, but ultimately decided to join the Bundesliga club instead.

Haaland has since cemented his reputation as one of European football’s deadliest strikers and Dortmund will face a significant battle to keep him, as well as Jadon Sancho, in the summer, particularly if they fail, as seems likely, to secure Champions League qualification.

Tuchel has made an impressive start, meanwhile, to his Chelsea tenure but with Timo Werner failing to fire and Tammy Abraham likely earn the majority of his starting opportunities in the cup competitions, a new centre forward is likely to represent one of his summer priorities.

Haaland will have the pick of his club, assuming he decides to seek a fresh challenge, but Merson believes Chelsea represents his best option and has urged United to concentrate on making a move for Tottenham talisman Harry Kane instead.

He told the Daily Star: ‘Of all the teams who are in for Erling Haaland, Chelsea are the ones who need him most. They have always been successful with someone who has a presence up front and Haaland has that. He’s going to score bundles wherever he goes.

‘And if you buy him this summer, you still have the prospect of being able to sell him for a profit later down the line because of his age. I’m not sure he’s such a good fit for Manchester City, where he probably wouldn’t play as much.

‘But for whoever gets him, it will be worth it. He puts up numbers and he keeps on doing it. Whoever signs him will have a chance of winning the league.

‘Manchester United should also be in for him. Edinson Cavani has done great there but he isn’t the future of Manchester United. If they went and got Haaland it would take them to another level. But do they go for Harry Kane instead?
