Owen Hargreaves pinpoints Man United selection dilemma for Solskjaer

2 min read

Owen Hargreaves believes Ole Gunnar Solskjaer will have a tough job dropping Axel Tuanzebe from the Manchester United defence.

The United centre-back enjoyed a stunning return to action in the 2-1 Champions League victory over PSG on Tuesday night. He quelled Kylian Mbappe and Neymar as Marcus Rashford’s late goal secured a deserved win for United in Paris.

Tuanzebe was playing his first game in 10 months after struggling with injuries, but he impressed in a back five alongside Aaron Wan-Bissaka, Victor Lindelof, Luke Shaw and new signing Alex Telles.

And Hargreaves said on BT Sport that United will struggle to leave out Tuanzebe, even when the injured Harry Maguire returns. United face Chelsea in the Premier League on Saturday.

“I love him,” said Hargreaves. “Good luck getting this guy out of the team.

“To be fair he is a good athlete, he makes good decisions, physically he has a presence, he wasn’t fazed by Mbappe or Neymar, I think he grew into the occasion.”

Hargreaves was also complimentary about new boy Telles, who impressed on his United debut after signing from Porto on transfer deadline day.

“He is a good player, a great attacking player,” Hargreaves said of Telles. “He gets assists, works up and down, he’s probably more suited to playing as a wing-back because defensively he’s not great.

“In terms of assists, his numbers are off the charts. He’s great on set pieces, he’s a good addition to United, a modern full-back. When Luke Shaw was at his best last season it was when he played left on a back three which might suit all parties.”
