Manchester United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer says the club have a ‘decent’ prospect in youngster Teden Mengi.

The 18-year-old made his debut for the club in a 2-1 win against LASK at Old Trafford on Wednesday as he entered the action with around six minutes left on the clock.

The centre-back has had a phenomenal year for United’s U23s and was unlucky not to make his debut earlier in the Europa League campaign against Astana.

Solskjaer has shown his willingness to promote academy products into the first team and he says Mengi has the right credentials to become a regular.

‘He’s a leader, a [proper] centre-back,’ said Solskjaer.

‘He’s one we believe in. He’s in the same age group as Mason [Greenwood]. They grew up together.

‘He’s strong, quick, good on the ball. We’ve got a decent player there.’

Victor Lindelof was a notable omission from United’s matchday squad and the Swede had struggled with a back injury towards the end of the Premier League season.

Eric Bailly started in his place but picked up a head injury at the end of the win but Solskjaer is confident that both players will be ready for the trip to Cologne for the quarter-final against Copenhagen.

‘Victor should be okayto travel,’ said Solskjaer.

‘Of course it’s great to get Eric throught the game. He’s had ups and downs but he played really well.’
