Newcastle boss Steve Bruce makes Aston Villa ace his top target amid Man Utd decision

2 min read

Steve Bruce is plotting a raid on his former club Aston Villa for midfielder John McGinn as he presses ahead with Newcastle’s transfer plans despite the uncertainty around their proposed takeover.

Newcastle continue to await news from the Premier League on the status of the £300million deal with a Saudi-backed consortium.

It has been nearly three months since owner Mike Ashley first agreed the deal but there is growing concern over whether it will get the green light.

Whatever happens, Bruce is keen to remain in charge and make additions to his squad.

And according to the Daily Star, McGinn is among Bruce’s primary targets this summer, especially if Villa are relegated.

Villa are three points from safety after conceding a late equaliser to Everton on Thursday.

If the Midlands clubs drop down to the Championship, the likes of McGinn and Jack Grealish are expected to receive plenty of interest from Premier League clubs.

The report says Manchester United were once keen on McGinn but the likelihood of Paul Pogba remaining at Old Trafford means the Scotland star is no longer being looked at.

Speaking ahead of Newcastle trip to Brighton on Monday, Bruce made clear he’d already identified players he wanted the club to target.

“And we’d be naive if we didn’t think of people who were out of contract. We are doing a bit on that respect.

“So it will be business, as usual, the best we can under what has been difficult circumstances concerning the pandemic.

“We need to see where we are and what we are but we are pressing on and planning in terms of going forward.

“And hopefully, we’ll be in a position to do some business sooner rather than later.”
