Michael Owen explains what he loved about Cavani’s Man United debut

Michael Owen was encouraged by Edinson Cavani’s debut and believes the striker will score goals for Manchester United.

The Uruguayan made his first appearance for the club at Old Trafford on Saturday during their 0-0 draw with Chelsea.

Cavani was introduced in the 58th minute after joining his new teammates at Carrington earlier in the week following a period of self-isolation in line with the UK’s COVID-19 guidelines.

The 33-year-old almost made the perfect start to his United career after gaining half a yard at the front post to meet a low free-kick, which nicked the side of the post and nestled in the side netting.

The same happened again as Cavani darted to the front post from the opposite channel, only for former Paris Saint-Germain teammate Thiago Silva to block his goal-bound effort.

That movement alone was encouraging for Owen, who believes Cavani will score plenty of goals with that sort of positioning in the 18-yard box.

“I love this guy’s movement, he’s my type of striker,” Owen told Premier League Productions.

“I’ve always said half a yard at the near post is better than two or three yards at the back post because invariably the ball doesn’t get there.

“Normally, against most defenders he might have got there in front, nicked it and he would’ve have got a block in.

“We only saw a brief cameo but I’ve seen him for years and years and always thought he’s one of the best movers in the game in terms of those little darting runs, he loves nipping in front of defenders.

“I think he’s going to score a few. As long as United have pressure on the opponents. They get crosses in.

“He’s very much an 18-yard box type of striker that makes darting runs.”
