Micah Richards thinks there is a lack of ‘respect’ for Manchester United new boy Edinson Cavani and that he is ‘world class’.

Cavani signed for United on transfer deadline day and Richards, the former Manchester City and Aston Villa defender, is convinced he will be a ‘massive player’ for them.

Cavani, 33, spent seven years with Paris Saint-Germain, scoring 200 goals in 301 games, while he has been capped 116 times by his country.

The Uruguay international has been signed to provide competition for the likes of Anthony Martial, Marcus Rashford, Odion Ighalo and Mason Greenwood in United’s forward line but some have questioned whether the £190,000-a-week striker will add anything to the squad at this late stage in his career.

But Richards was unimpressed with those who suggested Cavani was a poor addition and while he doesn’t think he will be part of United’s long-term plan, he views him as the ideal ‘stop-gap’.

‘People need to put more respect on Edinson Cavani’s name,’ Richards told Sky Sports. ‘He is world class.

‘I know he is 33, but he has still got top quality. He is exactly the player Man Utd need right now.

‘He presses from the front, he scores goals.

‘He is not going to be a part of a five-year plan, but as a stop-gap, to give United more time to bring in players over the coming seasons, for me he would be a massive player for Manchester United.’

Cavani wasn’t the only new recruit who signed a deal at Old Trafford on transfer deadline day.

Left-back Alex Telles arrived from Porto, Cavani’s compatriot Facundo Pellistri arrived from Club Atletico Penarol, while an agreement was reached for Amad Diallo Traore to arrive in future.
